Tell us about your business, and what makes it special to you?

I started my business back in May 2019 I was looking for a place where I could take care of my afro, also I thought about women with curly and wavy hair. I believed in my dreams and there is where the magic started to happen.

Tell us about the defining moment that propelled you to start your business, or follow your dreams.

I always loved discussing hair and different styles, but I didn't quite realize how passionate I was and I think that was because of the popularity of straightened, non-natural hair. Realistically I hated the monotony of continuously straightening my hair, because of this I decided to follow my intuition and get educated in what I really love. Metaphorically with every spiral of curly hair that I created, another spiral of conditioned ideas would un-twirl from my mind. In effect, I found myself falling in love with all different types of curly hair. In 2019 the situation was suitable and the moment was perfect. I decided to begin a new path, I dared to begin something different and finally started moving forward! I had to trust myself to a point where confidence was unconscious but a constant undertone of my mission. I jumped into the deep end and the rest is history, an accomplished dream!

What problem is your business solving? Why is this personal to you?

My business is solving curly girls' problems, this is personal to me because it's something I faced my whole life, I’m so glad to be able to help an under served community.

Tell us how you stay inspired as an entrepreneur.

I keep myself inspired by doing things I love; going dancing, going to the beach, or even to a nice green park. I also like to watch documentaries and I find inspiration in other women's lives and careers.

Tell us about a defining career milestone or job that impacted your personal trajectory.

I had my dream job, great salary, nice location, but all that aside I wasn't happy. I think that was the moment when I realized there is more to life than I was educated to obtain. As a woman I would like my work to transcend cities, countries and stories, that's why I decided to make a change in my life. The marathon continues...

Tell us about a woman who inspired you.

I have been inspired by Oprah Winfrey, by my mother, by Lucia Mbomio and by all the women that make sacrifices so that their daughters may have a career and life path built on the efforts of their mothers.

Do you feel you've mastered work/life balance? What could be improved or what would you like to work on?

I feel I'm on my way to master work and life balance, this year I realized everything I was doing was more related to my job than to my well being. After being aware of that behaviour I decided that wasn't what I want for my life. Do I want to be successful? Yes, I do! Do I want to make money? Yes, I do! Do I want to help people? Yes, I do! But none of these things are possible if I don't take care of and love myself. So nowadays the balance of priorities have changed and I go first. I have decided that in order to take care of others I need to take care of myself first and I’m so in love with the results. I’m paying attention to eating better, sleeping better, practicing yoga and doing things that bring joy to my life, that’s the key.

How do you release and unwind?

I really, really, really love to walk, that calms me down, that connects me to my center. Dancing is a good stress reliever and having some laughter after a long day is key. I feel like laughing is a great stress reliever. I like to write that is also great to let go of things we can't control.

What's the next big step for your business?

I think the next big step will be to start selling some products online and start giving online lessons in hair styling as well. That will be major!

Is there a quote/mantra that guides you?

"Do what you can, with what you have, where you are."

“Donde te siembren, florece” (where they sow you, flourish!)
